US Surgeon General Labels Loneliness a Public Health Epidemic
In 2023 the U.S. Surgeon General declared social isolation an epidemic, a finding echoed in a 2024 advisory that framed loneliness and isolation as major public‑health concerns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about one‑third of American adults feel lonely and a quarter lack social‑emotional support. Research links prolonged loneliness to markedly higher risks of heart disease (up 29 %), stroke (up 32 %), type‑2 diabetes, depression, anxiety, dementia (about 50 % higher in older adults) and premature death. Experts attribute these outcomes to chronic activation of the stress response, leading to inflammation, higher blood pressure, disrupted sleep and weakened immunity.
The advisory underscores the need for policies and community initiatives that foster social connection, noting that loneliness is not merely emotional distress but a determinant of physical health across the population.
