U.S. suspends Green Card processing for eight major tech firms
The U.S. government has suspended new and pending Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) applications for eight major technology and IT services companies, including Microsoft, Adobe, Capgemini, Cognizant, HCLTech, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, and Wipro.
Vice President JD Vance announced the move, accusing companies like Microsoft of abusing the immigration system by replacing laid-off American workers with foreign labor. Vance specifically cited Microsoft, alleging that for every American worker laid off, the company utilized approximately 1.5 foreign workers through H-1B programs.
In response to allegations of visa law abuses, the administration has also launched investigations into nine universities, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, and Brown.
While the suspension disrupts the Green Card pathway for many foreign workers, officials noted it does not lead to the automatic cancellation of existing H-1B visas. Some affected firms, such as Infosys, have indicated they do not expect a material impact from the decision.
