US tariffs impact Italian agri-food exports
Italian agricultural exports, particularly from Sardinia, are facing significant challenges due to new tariffs imposed by the United States. The 10 percent taxation is heavily impacting the dairy sector, where 74 percent of exports are directed to the US market. Pecorino Romano DOP and various wines have seen notable declines; Sardinian wine exports specifically fell below the national average.
While high-end olive oils appear more resilient to price increases, the broader agri-food sector in regions like Sassari and Nuoro is vulnerable due to its heavy reliance on the American market. Italian wine as a whole reportedly lost approximately 340 million euros during the first year of these tariff applications.
