US tariffs on Canadian imports threaten to raise hockey gear prices

New 50% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian imports are expected to significantly increase the cost of hockey equipment in the United States. Hockey sticks, skates, and custom goalie gear are among more than 550 goods targeted by the White House tariffs.

Major manufacturers such as Bauer, CCM, and True Hockey continue to produce many custom items in Canada for the U.S. market. Industry experts, including the CEO of the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, have noted that while some manufacturing has shifted to other countries, a substantial amount of equipment is still produced in Canada, making the 50% tariff a major issue for consumers.

Existing price trends already show rising costs for essential gear. For example, goaltender helmets that cost $400 in 2022 have risen to $1,000, and chest protectors have seen similar sharp increases. These new duties threaten to further escalate the financial burden on families participating in the sport.
