US teachers charged with child abuse in Indianapolis and Miami-Dade

Former Indianapolis Public Schools teacher Julious Johnican is set to plead guilty on Aug. 4 to a Level 6 felony for neglect of a dependent after video evidence showed him filming and encouraging fights among young students, including a 1st‑grade special‑needs child. The case stems from incidents at George Washington Carver Montessori IPS School in fall 2023, and Johnican resigned after the allegations became public.

In Southwest Miami‑Dade, former teacher Beatriz Gomez Hurtado was charged with child abuse after surveillance video showed her grabbing a 2‑year‑old boy’s neck and shaking him. A judge set her bond at $5,000, and the Lincoln‑Martí Community Agency terminated her employment and reported the incident to the Florida Abuse Hotline.
