Donald Trump Announces 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods
The U.S. administration under President Donald Trump announced a proposal to levy 50 percent tariffs on roughly $20‑$28 billion of Canadian imports, slated to take effect on 19 August. The duties target a range of consumer and industrial products, including hockey sticks, beer, dairy, plywood, cement and wine, while exempting energy, strategic minerals and items already covered by existing Section 232 duties.

Canadian officials estimate the measures would affect about 5 percent of Canada’s exports, roughly 0.8 percent of its GDP.
In response, the presidents of the United Steelworkers and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers sent a joint letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer urging a reconsideration of the tariffs. Canadian representatives, including Ontario’s Washington liaison David Paterson and Prime Minister Mark Carney, said the move underscores the need to intensify bilateral trade talks.
