US anti‑drug chief threatens Mexican officials as Sheinbaum rejects debate

U.S. drug‑policy chief Sara Carter warned that the United States will target Mexican politicians it says protect drug cartels, saying “we are attacking agents in Sinaloa, all officials who are part of the Culiacán clan.” She cited extradition orders against ten Mexican officials, including Sinaloa governor Rubén Rocha Moya, and members of the Chapitos and Mayitos factions of the Sinaloa Cartel.

President Claudia Sheinbaum responded that Mexico will not enter a debate with Carter, stressing the country’s sovereignty and focusing on prevention. She noted “it is their opinion and we have our position,” and said Mexico will continue its strategy to reduce drug trafficking while maintaining bilateral security cooperation. Carter also highlighted recent U.S.‑Mexico cooperation that led to the killing of El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The exchange reflects heightened tension in U.S.–Mexico relations under President Donald Trump, with both sides emphasizing differing approaches to combating narcotics and protecting officials.
