US warns foreign banks of sanctions over Iranian transactions

The US Treasury has issued a warning to foreign financial institutions regarding transactions involving Iran or its banking sector. The department stated that any international organization continuing to deal with sanctioned Iranian financial entities could face US sanctions at any time without prior notice.

Officials noted that the Iranian government is utilizing shadow banking and parallel channels to circumvent existing US sanctions. Consequently, the Treasury has called on international institutions to identify and avoid these channels.

In addition to the warning, the US has announced a new wave of sanctions targeting Iran's financial, cryptocurrency, rail, automotive, and manufacturing sectors. The Treasury also announced measures against two banks—one in the United Arab Emirates and another in Turkey—for allegedly providing assistance to Tehran.

These developments follow a military conflict initiated in late February involving the US and Israel, which resulted in the deaths of Iranian leaders. In response, Tehran targeted US allies in the Gulf and closed the Strait of Hormuz, leading to significant increases in global energy and fertilizer prices.
