President Donald Trump announced the restoration of a U.S. naval blockade of Iran and declared that the United States will act as the “guardian” of the Strait of Hormuz. He said the strait will remain open “with or without Iran” and that the U.S. will be reimbursed at a rate of 20 % of the cargo value for all ships transiting the waterway. The statement came after a series of U.S. strikes on Iranian targets, the third consecutive night of attacks, and Iran’s closure of the strait in response to recent U.S. actions. Trump made the remarks at a NATO summit in Ankara and on Truth Social, emphasizing that the fee will cover the costs of securing the volatile passage.

The escalation has pushed global oil prices higher, with Brent crude approaching $80 per barrel, and has contributed to a broader market sell‑off: U.S. equity indices fell, and Bitcoin dropped about 4 % to $61,750. Analysts link the market moves to heightened U.S.–Iran tensions and the risk of further disruptions to the vital oil‑shipping lane that carries roughly one‑fifth of world oil supplies.
