Brazil and U.S. to hold trade talks following new tariffs
Brazil and the United States have scheduled a virtual meeting for Monday, August 31, to address trade disputes following the imposition of significant tariffs by the U.S. government. Brazilian Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa, will meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. This diplomatic move follows a cordial phone call between Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Donald Trump, which opened a new channel for dialogue.
In July, the USTR imposed a 25% surcharge on various Brazilian products, including iron, steel, footwear, sugar, ethanol, and pharmaceutical goods. The U.S. cited concerns regarding deforestation, corruption, and forced labor as justifications. President Lula has contested these claims, describing the justifications as unfounded and harmful to both economies.
Simultaneously, Chile is engaged in high-level negotiations with the U.S. to mitigate a 12.5% tariff on several national exports, such as wine, salmon, and fruit. Jeffrey Goettman, a deputy U.S. Trade Representative, visited Santiago to meet with Chilean officials, including Undersecretary Paula Estévez. While copper and lithium remain exempt, Chilean authorities are working to expand the list of products excluded from the surcharges to protect the competitiveness of their agro-industrial and manufacturing sectors.
