Airbus loan sparks US-EU trade truce concerns

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has warned that a record-breaking loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to Airbus may violate the existing transatlantic trade truce. The financing, totaling approximately €3 billion ($3.4 billion), was announced in June to support Airbus research, development, and innovation in the commercial, defense, and space sectors through 2030.

Greer expressed concern that the lack of transparency regarding the loan's specific terms creates uncertainty in the aerospace sector. He noted that Washington has made repeated requests for details but has yet to receive them. The US is questioning whether the financing is being provided on commercial terms, as required by the 2021 agreement that suspended retaliatory tariffs between the US and the EU.

The loan is intended to benefit projects located in France, Germany, and Spain. While the United States has not formally declared a violation of the agreement or announced new tariffs, the intervention revives a long-standing dispute over government subsidies for aircraft manufacturers that lasted 17 years before the 2021 truce.
