US Trade Representative warns Trump’s 100% UK tariff threat is ‘not a bluff’

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has stated that President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 100% import tariff on the United Kingdom is ‘not a bluff’. The threat is a response to the UK’s digital services tax, which targets major American technology firms including Apple, Google, and Meta.

The UK levy applies to companies with global digital revenues exceeding £500 million. While the US administration has not yet taken formal action, Greer emphasized that the President is eager to enforce trade policies to ensure American companies are not discriminated against. However, Greer noted that he does not set ‘artificial timelines’ for the UK to respond or reverse its policy.

The tension follows previous criticisms from the US regarding the tax, which has become a significant revenue stream for the UK Treasury. The dispute adds further strain to the bilateral trade relationship between the two nations.
