U.S. Traffic Deaths Rise Over Independence Day Weekend

State highway patrols reported a surge in fatal crashes during the Fourth of July travel period. In Ohio, the State Highway Patrol confirmed 18 deaths in 18 separate crashes between July 2 and July 5, noting that lack of seat‑belt use and helmet compliance contributed to several fatalities. Troopers investigated 575 crashes, issued 1,722 distracted‑driving citations and removed 387 impaired drivers from roadways.

In Mississippi, the Highway Patrol responded to 110 crashes that left 38 injured and two dead – one in Marion County and a pedestrian in DeSoto County. Officers also assisted motorists with roadside services and issued more than 4,800 citations, including 74 impaired‑driving arrests. Both states emphasized heightened safety warnings for holiday travelers.
