US trailer orders surge in September

Heavy-duty trailer orders in the United States saw a significant increase in September as fleets moved to secure equipment ahead of the 2027 cycle. Industry data from ACT Research and FTR indicate a sharp rise in demand, with net orders reaching approximately 42,700 to 43,059 units.

Analysts attribute this surge to a “perfect storm” of factors, including pent-up replacement demand, improved carrier profitability, and a tightening driver supply. Additionally, many customers are accelerating purchases to get ahead of anticipated price increases driven by potential tariffs.

The spike has led to an increase in industry backlogs, with production slots being committed well into 2027. While the current activity indicates a shift in capital spending toward refreshing and expanding capacity, researchers cautioned that the exceptional order rate may not be sustained due to trade uncertainty, elevated equipment costs, and potential supply-chain constraints.
