US transfers detainees from Florida's 'Alligator Alcatraz' detention center

The Department of Homeland Security announced that all immigrants held at the temporary "Alligator Alcatraz" detention facility in the Florida Everglades have been moved to other prisons. The relocation was ordered ahead of the Atlantic hurricane season, with officials citing safety concerns for the detainees.

The makeshift camp, erected in eight days on a former runway and costing about $1 million per day, housed more than 1,300 people and had faced numerous lawsuits over poor conditions, lack of legal access, and environmental damage. Governor Ron DeSantis endorsed the closure, emphasizing the site's intended short‑term purpose. The transfer ends a high‑profile chapter of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement strategy, though the future location of the relocated detainees was not disclosed.
