U.S. Travel Advisory for Bahamas Highlights Crime and Jet‑Ski Safety Risks

On July 28 the U.S. Department of State renewed a Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas, urging travelers to exercise increased caution. The advisory cites violent crime – including armed robbery, burglary and sexual assault – that occurs throughout the islands, with most incidents reported in Nassau and Freeport, especially in the “Over the Hill” neighbourhood of Nassau. Visitors are advised to stay alert in public areas, secure vacation rentals and avoid isolated beaches.

The advisory also warns that water‑recreation activities are poorly regulated. Unlicensed or uninsured jet‑ski and boat operators have caused injuries, deaths and sexual assaults. Since August 2024, six U.S. citizens have been hospitalized after jet‑ski accidents and one was killed in August 2025 when struck by an unregistered boat. U.S. government employees are prohibited from renting jet skis, and all travelers are urged to avoid solo swimming, watch for watercraft near shore and follow local weather and marine alerts.
