US Treasury Bessent pledges support for Colombia's economic recovery
On July 22, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Colombia's vice‑president‑elect José Manuel Restrepo in Washington. The meeting, held ahead of Colombia's inauguration on August 7, focused on cooperation between the United States and the incoming administration of President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella.
Bessent said the Treasury will work with the future Colombian government and multilateral financial institutions to promote economic growth, attract foreign investment, and combat corruption and narcotrafficking. The Inter‑American Development Bank announced a $63 million non‑reimbursable fund to support the new administration. The pledge aligns with President Donald Trump’s expressed support for De la Espriella and reflects a broader U.S. commitment to Colombia's fiscal stability and development.
