G20 Finance Meeting sparks tension over Russian participation and media access

The G20 finance ministers' meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, has become a focal point of geopolitical tension and media controversy. The presence of Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, invited by the United States, has drawn sharp criticism from European officials. German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil described the reception of the Russian minister as a “worrying signal,” noting that relations cannot normalize while the war in Ukraine continues. In response to his presence, several European representatives refused to participate in the traditional group photograph including Siluanov.

During a bilateral meeting, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly informed Siluanov that no economic relief or agreements would be possible until the conflict in Ukraine ends. Despite these tensions, the meeting also addressed global economic issues, including AI investment, economic growth, and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, though China rejected several communique paragraphs on these topics.

Simultaneously, the US Treasury Department has faced backlash for denying accreditation to several high-profile journalists from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg News. Media organizations have condemned the move as an attempt to evade public scrutiny and undermine press freedom, while the Treasury stated the decision was not based on political viewpoint.
