US Treasury identifies $17.5 billion in suspected healthcare fraud

The US Treasury Department, through the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), has identified approximately $17.5 billion in suspicious transactions potentially linked to healthcare fraud. This finding follows an analysis of 5,702 reports filed by financial institutions under the Bank Secrecy Act between March 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.

The suspicious activity involves various healthcare benefit programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that these reports provide law enforcement with critical insight into actors exploiting US healthcare benefits.

Depository institutions accounted for 89 percent of the reports examined, representing nearly 87 percent of the total value of the identified suspicious activity. The filings identified subjects across every US state, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. Home healthcare businesses were the largest category of suspected providers, appearing in 20 percent of all healthcare fraud-related reports.
