US Treasury sanctions individuals and companies for supporting Iran

The US Department of the Treasury, through the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), has imposed sanctions on five individuals, four companies, and nine vessels for allegedly supporting Iran’s maritime activities. These actions are part of what officials termed an ‘Economic Exclusion Operation’ aimed at restricting the Iranian regime's ability to finance its military, weapons, and nuclear programs.

Key entities targeted include the Panama and Greece-based law firm Karnakis and Karnakis, as well as Amigoz Singapore, Roxte Maritime Shipping and Trading, and Wales Shipping Line. The sanctions affect several vessels, including seven Panama-flagged ships such as the Anemos and Destiny, and two UAE-flagged vessels, the Wales Diamond and Wales Pearl.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the administration will continue to identify and sanction those supporting the Iranian regime, regardless of whether they operate at sea or in legal offices. Additionally, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has issued administrative subpoenas to a Greek bank regarding potential links to sanctioned Iranian financial actors. OFAC has issued two general licenses to facilitate the orderly wind-down of certain transactions and to ensure safety and environmental protection during cargo discharges.
