U.S. targets Iran with $1B crypto seizure and land trade blockades
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced an 'absolute isolation campaign' aimed at the complete economic containment of Iran. A primary component of this strategy involves the potential seizure of $1 billion in Iran-linked cryptocurrency this week. Bessent stated that authorities have located these assets and are working to isolate them.
Beyond digital assets, the United States is expanding its efforts to block Iran's physical trade routes. The U.S. is reportedly collaborating with Turkey and Pakistan to close off critical land-based commercial passages. This move aims to complement existing maritime blockades and restrictions on international aviation.
The Treasury Department has also expanded secondary sanctions to target sectors including technology, gold, shipping, and aviation. Recent enforcement actions include penalties against 60 entities and individuals accused of supporting Iranian oil revenue and weapons procurement. These measures are intended to dismantle the financial lifelines of the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
