US Treasury Secretary Bessent addresses G20 trade and sanctions

At the G20 Finance Ministers meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed several critical global economic issues. Bessent called on G20 members to re-evaluate their trade terms with China, citing its $1.2 trillion trade surplus and manufacturing overcapacity. He warned that the world is facing a massive debt crisis and emphasized that economic growth is the primary solution.

Regarding Middle East tensions, Bessent indicated that the US Treasury is likely to implement weekly secondary sanctions to increase economic pressure on Iran. These measures will target sectors such as digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping to prevent sanctions evasion.

In bilateral discussions, Bessent met with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov to discuss a potential peace plan for Ukraine, a meeting that drew criticism from some European officials. Additionally, Bessent met with Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama to coordinate actions for stabilizing the Japanese yen, which has faced pressure following interest rate gaps and market volatility.

Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh maintained that the 2% inflation target remains firm, signaling a cautious approach to future interest rate adjustments.
