U.S. Treasury issues new banking guidelines for undocumented immigrants

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced new guidelines aimed at increasing banking oversight regarding loans and financial services provided to undocumented immigrants. These directives, issued by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), instruct financial institutions to identify, monitor, and control credit risks associated with non-authorized workers.

Speaking to bankers in Phoenix, Arizona, Bessent emphasized that the administration will not tolerate the "blatant abuse of our financial system" or the risks posed by extending services to individuals without legal work authorization. The initiative is part of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump to combat financial fraud and schemes such as payroll tax evasion, identity theft, and the use of shell companies or illegal labor brokers.

To assist in this effort, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has provided guidance to help banks detect suspicious patterns related to illegal employment and financial exploitation. The measures are part of a broader strategy to use federal departments, including the Treasury, to address immigration and border security concerns through financial regulation.
