US Treasury urges rapid debt restructuring for Senegal
The United States Treasury is calling for Senegal to complete its public debt restructuring process in less than one year. During the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable in Washington, US Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs Erin Browne urged both the Senegalese government and creditors to adopt this accelerated timeline.
Washington views Senegal’s request for debt treatment as a critical test case for the G20 Common Framework. The goal is to demonstrate the efficiency of this multilateral mechanism and avoid the prolonged delays that characterized previous restructuring efforts in Zambia and Ghana.
The roundtable, which includes sovereign borrowers, official creditors, and private sector representatives, aims to improve coordination and streamline negotiations. Senegalese officials have already begun early discussions with creditors to leverage the framework and achieve a viable, transparent agreement.
