US Treasury yields hit 19-year high amid rising debt concerns

US Treasury yields have surged, with 30-year yields hitting a 19-year high above 5.3%. This volatility is driven by concerns over rising inflation, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and the massive US fiscal deficit. The July budget deficit reached $432.3 billion, the highest monthly level since March 2021, contributing to a national debt that exceeded 100% of GDP.

Interest payments on the nearly $40 trillion national debt are projected to exceed $1 trillion this year. This rising cost of debt is creating global pressure, with long-term bond yields also hitting multi-decade highs in Japan, Germany, and France.

To stabilize markets and prevent a massive sell-off of US Treasuries, the US and Japan recently engaged in a joint foreign exchange intervention to support the yen. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated efforts to reduce the deficit and manage Treasury supply to mitigate further interest rate hikes.
