U.S. trial against Cuban pilot in Hermanos al Rescate case postponed

A U.S. federal trial against Cuban pilot Luis Raúl González-Pardo regarding the 1996 shootdown of two Hermanos al Rescate aircraft has been postponed until at least September. The trial, originally scheduled to begin on August 24 in Miami, was delayed following requests from both the defense and prosecutors due to the complexity and volume of evidence.

Judge Darrin Gayles of the Southern District of Florida has scheduled a status conference for September 2 to determine the next steps in the legal process. Court documents indicate the case involves a significant amount of evidence, including classified material, obsolete media formats, and physical evidence dating back three decades, as well as reports that were not previously stored in electronic formats.

González-Pardo is the only individual currently detained among six Cubans indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice in May. The indictments, which also include former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, involve charges of conspiracy to kill Americans and murder. The 1996 incident resulted in the deaths of four individuals—three U.S. citizens and one legal resident—during a mission to assist Cuban rafters.
