US Trump administration rescinds rule forcing green‑card applicants to file abroad

The Trump administration withdrew a May 22 directive that required temporary foreign nationals seeking permanent residency (green cards) to leave the United States and submit their applications from their home countries. The Department of Homeland Security said the rule will now be applied on a case‑by‑case basis and will not affect high‑skill migrants who have complied with existing law.

The change follows widespread public backlash and criticism from immigrant‑rights groups and lawmakers. Representative Xochitl García described the policy as “absurd and harsh,” warning that it could force thousands of lawful residents, including spouses of U.S. citizens, to abandon their homes and jobs. The reversal is part of a broader anti‑immigration effort that has also limited asylum avenues.
