US‑UK Aircraft Wastewater Study Offers Early Warning for Pandemics

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United Kingdom Health Security Agency ran a pilot program that systematically collected aircraft wastewater from flights linking the United States and the United Kingdom. Over a ten‑month period (March 2024 – January 2025) researchers gathered 424 samples.

About three‑quarters of the samples (≈75 %) tested positive for at least one respiratory pathogen, including influenza A, influenza B, SARS‑CoV‑2 and respiratory syncytial virus. Roughly 72 % contained at least one gastrointestinal pathogen. The study showed that wastewater can be sampled and analysed without compromising passenger or airline privacy and without disrupting flight operations.

The pilot detected the XEC variant of COVID‑19 in wastewater from UK‑origin flights on 17 September 2024, four weeks before it appeared in US‑origin flights. The first clinical case of the XEC variant in the United States was recorded in July 2024. Researchers suggest expanding the approach into a global network of “airport surveillance” sites to provide an early‑warning system for emerging pathogens.
