US union households show growing political diversity
Data from the 2024 election reveals a growing disconnect between union leadership and the political leanings of union households. While union leaders remain almost exclusively aligned with the Democratic Party, the households they represent are increasingly politically diverse.
National exit polls indicate that Kamala Harris won union households with a 53 percent to 45 percent margin, a significant decrease from Joe Biden’s 16-point lead in the previous election. Notably, Donald Trump secured a wide margin among white union-household voters without a college degree.
This political split is further highlighted by a mismatch in financial contributions. While approximately 45 percent of union households voted Republican in 2024, roughly 87 percent of union political spending benefited Democrats. Specific sectors show even greater disparities; for example, building-trades contributions were approximately 88 percent Democratic, and certain public-sector PACs often exceed 95 percent in Democratic support.
