U.S. Universities Face Legal Battles Over Academic Freedom

Over the past few years, dozens of U.S. faculty and staff members have been disciplined or dismissed for speech on campus or online and have filed lawsuits alleging wrongful termination and First Amendment violations. Notable cases include art therapy professor Savneet Talwar at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, activist Steven Thrasher at Northwestern University, and a district‑court victory for West Point professor Tim Bakken, whose lawsuit struck down a policy requiring pre‑approval of faculty speech.

The National Coalition Against Censorship has filed amicus briefs supporting the American Association of University Professors, Harvard University and Columbia University in separate challenges to the Trump administration’s attempts to withhold federal funding unless the schools adopt government‑favored admissions and disciplinary policies. The briefs argue that coercing private universities to conform to political viewpoints violates the First Amendment.
