U.S. universities launch mental health and suicide prevention initiatives
Universities are increasing mental health awareness and support initiatives as September marks Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. At Sacramento State, campus programs are working to connect students with resources to address challenges such as academic pressure, financial stress, and social isolation. Research indicates that 37% of college students report moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms, while 32% report moderate-to-severe anxiety.
Similarly, the University of Alabama is hosting Suicide Awareness Week in collaboration with the student organization Tide Against Suicide. The initiative aims to educate the campus community on recognizing signs of struggle and providing support. Events include QPR training, therapy dogs, and a Suicide Awareness walk to honor those lost to suicide. Suicide remains the second leading cause of death among college students in the United States.
