U.S. Utilities and Corporations Boost Clean Energy and Data Center Power Plans
PPL Electric reported its "advanced" data‑center pipeline in Pennsylvania has risen 12% to 28.3 GW by 2034, with 5 GW under construction and a target of 20.7 GW by 2030. The utility’s joint venture with Blackstone Infrastructure aims to add generation capacity, including gas‑turbine reservations, battery storage, a 266‑MW pumped storage project, and potential small modular nuclear reactors in Kentucky.
Separately, the Corporate Energy Buyers Association said corporate clean‑energy purchases in the United States hit a record 27 GW in 2025, the largest year ever, and an estimated 17 GW were procured in Q1 2026. CEBA’s CEO Rich Powell highlighted that demand remains "extremely strong" despite recent federal tax‑incentive rollbacks, while noting that permitting, transmission constraints and rising costs are key challenges.
Together, the data underscore a rapid expansion of clean‑energy demand from both utilities serving data‑center loads and large corporate buyers across the U.S.
