US vehicle ownership costs average $5,851 annually above loan payments
An analysis by Insurify reveals that American drivers face an average of $5,851 in annual expenses beyond their monthly auto loan payments. These secondary costs include approximately $2,237 for full-coverage auto insurance, $2,126 for gasoline, and $1,488 for maintenance and repairs.
Vehicle purchase prices have risen significantly since 2019, with new cars averaging $49,855 and used vehicles averaging $27,028 as of July. This represents a 29 to 34 percent increase, outpacing general inflation. Insurance premiums have seen particularly sharp growth, rising about 50 percent since July 2019. Analysts suggest these increases are driven by inflation-related repair costs and the rising technological complexity of modern vehicles.
Beyond direct ownership, monthly loan payments also remain a heavy burden, averaging $765 for new car buyers and $542 for used car buyers. Drivers often underestimate the total financial commitment of motoring, frequently overlooking ongoing expenses such as depreciation, taxes, and fluctuating fuel prices.
