Alaska LNG project requires further coordination with South Korea, says JD Vance

U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated that the Alaska Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) development project still requires further coordination with South Korea. This comment follows a discrepancy between the administration's stance and the South Korean government's position regarding the project's status.

President Donald Trump previously claimed that South Korea had agreed to invest over $50 billion in the Alaska LNG project. He has also used aggressive rhetoric, suggesting that if South Korea does not commit to the investment, the U.S. might double its charges or impose higher tariffs.

In contrast, the South Korean government maintains that no final decision has been made. Officials emphasize that any participation in the massive project, which involves a 1,300km pipeline, must be predicated on commercial feasibility and domestic legal requirements. South Korean Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hyung-il confirmed that the project is currently in the review stage.

Separately, South Korea has begun executing its broader investment plan in the U.S., having recently transferred $2.4 billion for 'Project Star,' an AI data center gas power plant in Texas.
