US Vice President rejects watching live execution broadcast

U.S. Vice President JD Vance has stated he will not watch the live broadcast of a scheduled firing squad execution, expressing skepticism regarding whether the Pentagon will follow through with the plan. The proposed broadcast concerns the execution of Nidal Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood massacre.

The initiative, championed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, has faced significant backlash from various sectors. Republican lawmakers, religious leaders, and international observers have criticized the move. Senator John Curtis argued that such broadcasts dehumanize the process, while Archbishop Paul Coakley described the plan as a ‘barbaric promotion of a culture of death.’

President Donald Trump has noted that while Hasan deserves the death penalty, a final decision on the live broadcast has not been made. Meanwhile, the United Nations human rights office and Amnesty International have raised concerns, suggesting that public executions may violate prohibitions against cruel or degrading treatment.
