US Vice President Vance says Poland troop rotation delayed, not withdrawn

U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance told reporters that the scheduled deployment of American forces to Poland has been postponed, not cancelled. He emphasized that the United States is not pulling troops out of Europe and that the delay is a temporary re‑orientation of resources intended to maximize U.S. security.

Vance urged European allies to assume a greater share of responsibility for collective defence, saying the shift does not harm Europe. He clarified that the number of U.S. troops—about 4,000—in Poland has not been reduced, only the rotation schedule has been delayed. The Pentagon has not provided further details on future force allocations.

The comments come amid longstanding expectations that the U.S. would reduce its European military presence, a policy direction favored by President Donald Trump, who has called on NATO to take on more defence duties. Some U.S. officials expressed concern that the changes could reflect a broader departure from alliance commitments.
