US Video Game Sales Rise in May 2026 as Nintendo Switch 2 Boosts Spending

Industry analyst Mat Piscatella reported that total video‑game spending in the United States reached $4.2 billion in May 2026, a 3 percent increase over the same month a year earlier. Console‑based content drove most of the growth, up 25 percent year‑on‑year, while PC content rose 15 percent and subscription spending grew 11 percent.

The best‑selling title for the month was 007 First Light, which also moved into fourth place among year‑to‑date best‑sellers. Other new entries in the top‑ten included Forza Horizon 6, LEGO Batman – Legacy of the Dark Knight and Subnautica 2.

Hardware sales showed a mixed picture. Nintendo’s Switch 2 continued strong performance, reaching 5.9 million units sold in its first 12 months in the US, making it the second‑fastest‑selling Nintendo console after the Game Boy Advance. In contrast, both PlayStation and Xbox recorded their worst May hardware sales in history, with PlayStation unit sales down 58 percent and hardware spending down 43 percent year‑over‑year, while Xbox logged its lowest monthly unit total ever despite higher average revenue per unit.
