US violent crime hits record lows amid midterm election shifts

United States violent crime rates experienced a significant decline in 2025. According to FBI statistics, violent crime fell by approximately 10%, marking the largest single-year decrease since national estimates began in 1936. Specific categories saw notable drops: murder and non-negligent manslaughter decreased by 18%, robbery by 19%, rape by 8%, and aggravated assault by 7%. Property crimes also declined by more than 12%. The national homicide rate fell to approximately 4.1 per 100,000 people, the lowest level recorded since 1956.

These trends occur amid political shifts ahead of the November midterm elections. While Democrats face challenges regarding economic issues like inflation, they may benefit from the improved public safety landscape. In the Senate, Democrats are pursuing a path to reclaim the majority, which would require flipping four Republican-held seats while defending two vulnerable ones in Georgia and Michigan. Current political dynamics include fluctuating job approval ratings for President Trump and varying levels of voter enthusiasm between the two major parties.
