U.S. Visa Process Tightened: New Family Interview Rule and Common Denial Causes

The United States Department of State has introduced a new requirement that every member of a family applying for a B1/B2 tourist visa must attend a consular interview in person, regardless of age. Each applicant must complete an individual DS‑160 form, pay separate visa fees, and present their own documentation. The change, announced by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, aims to evaluate each traveler’s intent, ties to their home country, and eligibility for entry.

Separately, guidance for Colombian applicants outlines frequent reasons visas are denied. Errors or inconsistencies on the DS‑160, exaggerated income claims, lack of stable employment, insufficient evidence of travel purpose, and failure to demonstrate strong ties to the home country are cited as primary causes of refusal. Applicants are advised to provide honest, consistent answers and supporting documents during the interview to improve approval chances.
