US voter challenges expected in 2026 midterms as Trump pushes election integrity

A Brennan Center for Justice report warned that mass voter challenges are likely to increase in the 2026 United States midterm elections. The study noted that more than 185,000 challenges to voter eligibility were filed in 2024, and that the true number is probably higher because many officials did not respond to inquiries. Experts expressed concern that such challenges, while rarely successful, can create confusion, suppress turnout among vulnerable groups and undermine confidence in the electoral process.

Political analysts also anticipate that former President Donald Trump may pursue legal strategies to delay certification of Democratic victories in close races. They suggest lawsuits could focus on states with large immigrant populations and high numbers of mail‑in or absentee ballots, seeking injunctions that extend the certification timeline toward the constitutional deadline of January 3, 2027. The goal would be to influence the composition of the incoming Congress rather than to overturn individual results.
