US voters cite cost of living as top concern ahead of midterms

A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that the cost of living is a primary concern for voters ahead of the upcoming midterm elections on November 3. Approximately 78% of Americans blame Donald Trump’s policies for rising prices that outpace wages. Notably, 57% of Trump voters reported that the cost of living is increasing disproportionately to their income, citing issues such as import tariffs and energy costs following the conflict in Iran.

Economic dissatisfaction is widespread, with 68% of all respondents expressing discontent with inflation. This sentiment has contributed to declining popularity for Trump and has impacted support for his party. Among Republicans, roughly one in four disapprove of his economic management, a view shared by 63% of independents and 92% of Democrats.

The poll also highlights a significant gap in voter enthusiasm. Supporters of Kamala Harris are considerably more motivated to vote, with 48% describing themselves as ‘very enthusiastic’ about the midterms, compared to only 30% of Trump supporters. Additionally, there are indications of shifting demographics, as male voters show trends toward the Democratic Party, potentially challenging the voter coalition that supported Trump in 2024.
