US voters support using AI to detect government fraud

A new poll by The Center Square Voters’ Voice reveals that a bipartisan majority of registered voters support using artificial intelligence to detect fraud, waste, and abuse in government programs like Medicaid. According to the survey, 60% of voters favor the use of AI for this purpose, while 27% oppose it and 13% remain unsure.

Support for AI implementation spans political lines, with 74% of Republicans, 57% of independents, and 48% of Democrats in favor. This comes as the federal government struggles with significant financial losses; the Government Accountability Office estimates annual fraud losses could range between $233 billion and $521 billion.

In fiscal 2025, federal agencies reported approximately $186 billion in improper payments, largely driven by overpayments in programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Data from the Congressional Research Service indicates that a significant portion of overpayments—roughly $556.6 billion between fiscal 2021 and 2024—resulted from agencies failing to access data they already possessed.
