United States voters deem Iran war costly, hurting Trump’s support

A Financial Times poll of 1,795 American voters finds that 58 % say the war against Iran does not justify its cost, while 44 % believe the conflict has left the United States in a weaker position vis‑à‑vis Iran. Only 31 % think the war has strengthened U.S. standing.

Respondents also expressed scepticism about the recently signed U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding, with 66 % saying it will have little or no impact on peace and could increase regional instability. The White House has asked Congress to approve an additional $67 billion to fund the war.

Regarding NATO, 53 % support continued U.S. membership and 23 % favor withdrawal. Trump’s overall approval fell to 36 %, a drop of two points, with independent voters at just 21 % approval. The poll shows Democrats holding a six‑point lead over Republicans ahead of the November mid‑term elections, while three‑quarters of self‑identified Republican voters say they are likely to vote.

The findings arrive as the NATO summit convenes in Ankara, highlighting the political stakes of the war for Trump’s administration and the upcoming congressional races.
