USA warns EU of devastating retaliation over Starlink spectrum proposal

US Ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, has warned that European companies could face 'devastating' commercial retaliation from Washington if the European Union proceeds with plans to restrict access to specific radio frequency spectrums.

The dispute centers on a European Commission proposal under the Digital Networks Act (DNA) to reserve a portion of the spectrum used for direct satellite-to-smartphone connections for European operators. This move aims to bolster European technological sovereignty and reduce dependence on US and Chinese firms.

SpaceX, which operates the Starlink satellite network, has expressed strong opposition, stating that these changes could negatively impact connectivity in Ukraine, where the service is critical for both civilian and military communications. Puzder argued that attempting to boost European competitiveness by undermining US companies is not a legitimate legislative goal, urging Brussels and Washington to cooperate instead to compete with China in fields like artificial intelligence.
