U.S. Weather Forecast Accuracy Risks Decline as Observation Funding Slashed

Atmospheric scientists warn that reductions in the United States' observational data collection—particularly cuts to upper‑air radiosondes and weather balloons—could erode the precision of numerical weather prediction models used by the National Weather Service. Less frequent atmospheric soundings would diminish the quality of forecasts for severe storms, hurricanes and daily temperature trends, potentially leaving emergency managers and the public with reduced warning times.

Globally, dense observation networks that include surface stations, radiosondes, buoys and satellites are essential for initializing forecast models. Small errors in data collection or processing, such as rounding during temperature conversions, can affect regional temperature projections and increase model divergence, especially beyond five days. Maintaining robust observation programs is therefore critical for reliable weather forecasting worldwide.
