U.S. weekend traffic deaths surge in 2024

In 2024, traffic crashes in the United States claimed 39,254 lives, averaging over 107 fatalities per day, according to data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Analysis by the National Safety Council shows that fatalities were not evenly distributed across the calendar. The 25 deadliest days were overwhelmingly weekends—23 Saturdays or Sundays and two Fridays—concentrated in the summer and fall months and often falling on holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and Labor Day. The single most lethal day was Saturday, June 8, with 161 deaths.

The pattern reflects higher traffic volumes, longer trips, increased alcohol consumption and driver fatigue on these dates. Experts suggest motorists consider leaving earlier, allowing extra travel time and staying more alert on high‑risk days to reduce the likelihood of a fatal crash.
