U.S. Wildlife Conservation Gains Momentum with Farm Bill Advocacy and Poacher Penalties

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has joined a coalition of more than 70 conservation, agriculture, forestry and sporting groups to back the U.S. Senate’s discussion draft of the 2026 Agricultural Act. The coalition urges lawmakers to preserve and expand voluntary conservation programs such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, Conservation Stewardship Program, Conservation Reserve Program and Voluntary Public Access‑Habitat Incentive Program, which provide technical and financial assistance to private landowners for wildlife habitat, forest health, water quality and soil protection.

Separately, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service highlighted enforcement of wildlife laws after 21‑year‑old Carter J. Hickey of New Philadelphia, Ohio, pleaded guilty to 17 poaching violations spanning 17 states. He was sentenced to 15 days in jail, two years of probation, $12,000 in restitution, $5,500 in fines, loss of firearms and a five‑year hunting ban, and was required to post a public apology on TikTok. The case underscores the agency’s commitment to protecting wild turkey and other game species from illegal harvest.
