US youth political engagement declines amid polarization

In the United States, youth political engagement is facing significant challenges, with voter turnout among 18 to 29-year-olds falling below 50% in the last two elections. This decline is occurring amidst high levels of political polarization that have split young voters into distinct ideological groups.

One segment of the youth population is moving toward the Republican Party, driven by frustrations with the economy and identity politics. This group includes many young men, particularly white and Latino men, who are drawn to Donald Trump’s anti-establishment persona and his vision of returning to a traditional American status quo.

Conversely, a segment of the Democratic base consists of individuals with far-left beliefs. However, this group is smaller in number, and many within it express disillusionment with the effectiveness of the voting process itself.
