US5 boyband documentary explores dark side of fame and abuse

The ARD Kultur documentary “Lost Boys – Der Fall US5” will be released on the ARD Mediathek starting December 2, 2026. The film examines the rise and fall of the successful 2000s boyband US5, featuring the first joint reflections from all five former members: Jay Khan, Chris Watrin, Mykel Johnson, Richie Stringini, and Izzy Gallegos.

While the group achieved massive commercial success with hits like “Maria,” the documentary reveals the dark reality behind their fame. The members discuss the psychological pressure, addiction, forced outing, and sexual abuse they experienced. A central figure in the documentary is music manager Lou Pearlman, who was known for managing the Backstreet Boys and N SYNC. Member Jay Khan speaks about the sexualized violence inflicted upon him by Pearlman. Although Pearlman was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fraud and money laundering before his death in 2016, he was never charged for physical or sexual abuse.

The production includes previously unreleased private archival footage, including hours of material from Izzy Gallegos, providing an intimate look at the band's life behind the scenes.
