USA Rare Earth partners with Pasqal and Riven to advance quantum mineral separation

USA Rare Earth Inc. has entered a partnership with Pasqal and Riven Systems to utilize quantum machine learning to enhance rare earth element separation technology. The collaboration aims to discover new chemical extractants that are more effective than current alternatives, potentially reducing the size, cost, and energy requirements of processing facilities.

The project focuses on the technical challenge of separating mixed rare earth carbonate into individual oxides, a process currently dominated by China. Riven Systems will use an automated minerals separation laboratory to conduct thousands of experiments, while Pasqal will provide neutral atom quantum computing technology to compare quantum machine learning models against classical computing models.

While the partnership targets a major bottleneck in the critical minerals supply chain, market reaction has been mixed. USA Rare Earth shares recently saw a 1.7% decline. Analysts noted that while the initiative could improve domestic processing capacity and recovery rates, the partnership is a long-term development effort without disclosed contract values or guaranteed commercial timelines.
